Open Educational Resources: OER - Introduction

A guide to the Open Educational Resources initiative at Ohio Dominican University

Open Educational Resources - What are they?

According to the OhioLINK Affordable Learning Ohio Page, "The Hewlett Foundation defines OER as 'teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and repurposing by others.' Other definitions of OER exist and, generally, they identify three primary components; learning materials that are freely available and licensed in a way that enable their reuse by users."

Open Educational Resources can include:

  • Textbooks (Open access, creative commons, or otherwise open use)
  • Ancillary materials
  • Video presentations
  • Interactive materials

Faculty Reviews

"Working with [the OER Librarian] on OER resources was a wonderful process from start to finish. He listened carefully, quickly tackled the challenge, and kept me informed as he made progress. The resources he identified made a true difference for students." - Dr. Natalie Kompa

"The research help provided by the OER Librarian was critically important providing me with resources I would not have located on my own.  Online and electronic sources are becoming even more essential in curricular design and instruction, so it requires research expertise. " - Dr. John Mascazine
