Affordable Learning: Introduction

What is Affordable Learning?

Affordable Learning is an attempt by faculty, staff, librarians, and others across all spectrums of campus to provide more affordable options to students in place of, or jointly with, traditional textbooks. These initiatives can include Open Educational Resources, Library Resources, Inclusive Access,  Course Reserves, and more. Ohio Dominican University is proud to be a leader in Ohio amongst universities looking to help solve the problem of added educational expenses. 

Affordable Learning Initiatives - What are they?

Affordable Learning Initiatives include:​

 

  • ​ Course Reserves ​
    • The library offers a comprehensive Course Reserves program. Faculty can bring in personal copies of textbooks and other materials (or use materials owned by the ODU Library) and request that they are placed on course reserve for one or both semesters each academic year.   • Inclusive Access 
    • ​Inclusive Access is a traditional textbook, delivered electronically, for a steep discount versus print textbook costs. It is the same material as the print book. Ohio Dominican is preparing to enter into an inclusive access pilot through OhioLINK and Barnes and Noble's First Day program. After a successful pilot, Inclusive Access is more widely available, and is expanding! 

       

  • Open Educational Resources 
    • ​​Open Educational Resources (also known as OER's) are materials that are open access, contain creative commons licenses, or are otherwise free to access and use. Ohio Dominican University has faculty that use OER's in the classroom currently, with more coming on board each semester. 

 

  • Library Resources
    • ​The Ohio Dominican University Library already has access to thousands of eJournals and eBooks which can be used in courses via a link in the Learning Management System. These texts can supplement and sometimes even replace, traditional textbooks in courses.
